The Christian life is a journey of continuous growth, and one of the greatest ways to grow spiritually is by spending time in God's Word. Just as a plant needs water and sunlight to grow, every believer—especially children—needs the Bible to become strong in faith. God's Word teaches us how to live, helps us know Him better, and guides us to make wise choices every day.
The Bible is God's special message to us. It tells us who God is, how much He loves us, and His wonderful plan for our lives. 2 Timothy 3:16–17 says, "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." This means that every part of the Bible is useful for teaching us the right way to live.
Growing in God's Word begins with reading it regularly. We should not read the Bible only on Sundays or during church services. Instead, we should make it a daily habit. Joshua 1:8 says, "This Book of the Law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night... then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success." When we read and think about God's Word every day, it helps us become wiser and stronger in our faith.
Listening to God's Word is another important step. We hear God's Word during church services, Sunday school, Bible study, and from our parents and teachers. Romans 10:17 reminds us, "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Every time we hear God's Word with an open heart, our faith grows stronger.
Memorizing Bible verses is also a wonderful way to grow spiritually. When we keep God's Word in our hearts, it helps us make good decisions and avoid sin. King David said in Psalm 119:11, "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." Even when we do not have a Bible with us, the verses we have memorized can encourage and guide us.
However, growing in God's Word is not only about reading and memorizing it—it is also about obeying it. Jesus taught that those who hear His Word and obey it are like a wise man who built his house on a rock. When storms came, the house stood firm because it had a strong foundation (Matthew 7:24–25). God's Word becomes powerful in our lives when we put it into practice by telling the truth, showing kindness, forgiving others, respecting our parents, and loving our neighbors.
Jesus Himself is the greatest example of someone who lived by God's Word. When Satan tempted Him in the wilderness, Jesus answered every temptation by quoting Scripture, saying, "It is written" (Matthew 4:1–11). This teaches us that God's Word gives us strength to overcome temptation and stand firm in difficult times.
Children can also grow in God's Word by praying before they read the Bible. Asking the Holy Spirit to help us understand what we read makes the Bible more meaningful. Psalm 119:105 says, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." God's Word lights our way and helps us make choices that please Him.
Parents and teachers also play an important role in helping children grow in God's Word. Reading Bible stories together, discussing their lessons, praying as a family, and encouraging daily devotions help children build a lifelong love for Scripture. Deuteronomy 6:6–7 instructs parents to teach God's commands diligently to their children throughout daily life.
As we continue to read, study, memorize, and obey God's Word, we become more like Jesus. Our thoughts, words, and actions begin to reflect His love and truth. We become lights in our homes, schools, churches, and communities.
Growing in God's Word is not something that happens overnight. It is a daily journey that requires commitment, prayer, and obedience. Every time we open our Bible with a willing heart, God speaks to us, strengthens our faith, and prepares us for His purpose. Let us therefore love God's Word, study it faithfully, obey it joyfully, and allow it to shape our lives every day.
