Psalm 3vs3 says, “But thou, o Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head”. David wrote the passage above while fleeing from his own son Absalom (2 Samuel 15:13-30). He was betrayed by his own son, and he was rejected by people who should have stood by him. Life can sometimes push your head down through shame, fear, loss, rejection, or failure; no matter the rejection, the setback, or the weight of the failure, just know that God is still in the business of lifting people up.
There are times in life when circumstances will push one’s head down, but the good news is that, David, during his period of rejection, had given us the assurance through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that God is the lifter of man’s head. A bowed head is a symbol of shame; it is a sign of defeat. It is a period of sorrow and discouragement; a bowed head means the weight of life is too heavy to bear. It is a period of pains and crisis in man’s life; but the good thing is, no matter how low life has pushed your head down, God has the power to lift it up even beyond your expectations and human imagination.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN GOD LIFTS YOUR HEAD?
1. When God lifts your head, you will rise from anonymity to authority. That is, you will move from nobody to somebody. Genesis 40vs23. Joseph's head was bowed in prison; he was forgotten for another two years by the person who promised him freedom, but in Genesis 41vs41, God lifted his head from being a slave boy to a prime minister in the strange land. Joseph, who was a nobody, became somebody because God, the lifter of man’s head, lifted him from prison to the palace.
2. When God lifts your head, shame will turn to fame. Hannah, who became the mother of Prophet Samuel, was nobody in the eyes of Peninnah, the second wife of her husband. Her head was bowed in shame because of her barrenness; she had been mocked by Peninnah every day. 1 Samuel 1vs13-16; but when God came through for her, her head was lifted in Joy and she sang the song of thanksgiving in 1 Samuel 2vs1 that says, “… my heart rejoiceth in the lord, mine horn is exalted in the lord: my mouth is enlarge over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation”. Her shame was turned to fame; Hannah's fame came through her son, who became a national Prophet.
3. When God lifts your head, you will receive strength for the journey ahead. Elijah in 1 Kings 19vs4 was running from Jezebel, he was even praying that he wanted to die because he was tired of life, he was so tired to the level of wishing to die under the juniper tree; but God sent an angel with food and word of encouragement to him. 1 Kings 19vs7. It was after he received strength that he began to have a clear picture of where he was going and the assignment ahead of him. When strength comes, you will have a clear picture of what is ahead of you.
4. When God lifts your head, hope will be restored. A typical example is the story of the woman with the issue of blood in the book of Mark 5vs25-34. For a good twelve years, her hope was shattered; the hope of being healed was lost. She tried all she could to be healed, to the level of spending all that she had with the Physicians; but the moment Jesus stepped into her situation, her hope was restored immediately. No matter the situation you are going through, Jesus, the hope restorer, will step in, and that hope that has been lost will be restored.
