Power to rule is the God-given authority and ability to lead, overcome challenges, exercise responsibility, and fulfil God's purpose. From the beginning of creation, God designed humanity to exercise dominion over the earth. Genesis 1:26 says that God created mankind in His image and gave them authority over the living things He had made. This authority was not given for pride, oppression, or selfish ambition, but for responsible leadership under God's direction.
1. Power to Rule Is a Divine Gift
In Genesis 1:28, God blessed Adam and Eve and commanded them to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and exercise dominion. This shows that dominion begins with God's blessing and assignment. God gives people abilities, opportunities, wisdom, and responsibilities to fulfil His purposes.
Psalm 8:6 declares that God made humanity rulers over the works of His hands. Therefore, we should recognise our God-given potential and use it wisely. Whether in our families, workplaces, churches, or communities, we should lead with integrity, diligence, and humility.
2. Power to Rule Through Jesus Christ
Sin brought humanity into bondage and separated people from God. However, Jesus Christ came to bring redemption and freedom. Through His death and resurrection, believers receive new life and the grace to overcome sin.
Romans 5:17 teaches that those who receive God's abundant grace and the gift of righteousness will reign in life through Jesus Christ. This means Christians are not called to live as slaves to sin, fear, bitterness, or destructive habits. Through Christ, we can grow in spiritual maturity and live in obedience to God's Word.
Ephesians 2:6 also teaches that God has raised believers up with Christ and seated them with Him in the heavenly places. Our confidence, therefore, must rest in Christ's authority rather than human strength alone.
3. Power to Rule Over the Enemy
Luke 10:19 records Jesus giving His disciples authority over the power of the enemy. This reminds believers to stand firm in faith and resist evil through prayer, the Word of God, and obedience to Christ.
James 4:7 gives an important instruction: submit to God and resist the devil. Spiritual authority begins with submission to God. We must not live in fear but trust in God's promises, knowing that He is our strength and refuge.
4. Power to Rule Through Wisdom and Self-Control
True dominion begins with ruling ourselves. A person who cannot control anger, pride, jealousy, or destructive desires will struggle to lead others effectively.
Proverbs 16:32 teaches that controlling one's spirit is greater than conquering a city. Galatians 5:22–23 describes the fruit of the Spirit, including love, patience, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.
Therefore, the power to rule requires discipline, wisdom, prayer, and a willingness to follow the Holy Spirit. Godly leadership is demonstrated through character, not intimidation.
5. Power to Rule Through Service
Jesus Christ demonstrated that authority must be exercised through service and love. In Mark 10:43–45, He taught His disciples that whoever desires to become great must become a servant.
A Christian leader should encourage others, defend what is right, care for the needy, and use influence responsibly. Dominion does not mean controlling people; it means managing our responsibilities in a manner that honours God.
Conclusion
The power to rule is a divine responsibility and privilege. God created humanity with dominion, and through Jesus Christ, believers are empowered to live victoriously, resist evil, exercise self-control, and serve others faithfully.
Let us walk in faith, wisdom, humility, and obedience, remembering that all authority ultimately belongs to God. As we submit to Him, may our lives reflect His righteousness and bring glory to His name.
