UNDER A JUNIPER TREE
1 Kings 19:5 (KJV) - And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.
EXPOSITION
The account of Elijah lying under a juniper tree, asking God to take his life, should serve as a great lesson to us all. Judging by the threat from Jezebel, he became so overwhelmed that he wished for death. Although he did not commit suicide, knowing that taking his own life was not an option, he instead asked God to end his life.
As much as God has power over life and death, He is far more interested in giving life than taking it. That is why He sent an angel to strengthen, comfort, and encourage Elijah in his moment of distress.
The juniper tree is known for its ability to survive in mountainous regions, rocky places, and desert environments. This explains why Elijah found it to be a suitable place of refuge and rest.
My counsel to you is this: it is far better to rest in God during times of trouble than to make the juniper tree your option. True refuge is found not under a tree, but in the unfailing presence and sustaining grace of God.
