TEACH US TO NUMBER OUR DAYS

Life is one of God's greatest gifts, but it is also temporary. Every person receives a limited number of days on earth, and none of us knows exactly how many remain. This is why Moses prayed in Psalm 90:12, "Teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom."

This prayer is not simply about counting the days on a calendar. It is a request for God to help us understand the value of our time and use our lives wisely. When we recognize that our time is limited, we begin to ask more important questions: Am I living according to God's purpose? Am I using my gifts well? Am I blessing others? Am I making my life count for eternity?

LIFE IS TEMPORARY

Psalm 90 reminds us that human life is brief compared with God's eternal nature. James 4:14 describes life as "a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away."

This does not mean that life has no value. Instead, it reminds us that every moment is precious. Yesterday cannot be recovered, and tomorrow is not guaranteed. What we have is today.

Therefore, we should not continually postpone the things that truly matter. If there is someone we need to forgive, encourage, appreciate, or help, we should not assume there will always be another opportunity.

NUMBER YOUR DAYS WITH WISDOM

To number our days means to live intentionally. Instead of allowing every day to pass without purpose, we should seek God's direction for our lives.

Ephesians 5:15–16 says, "See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time."

Time is a resource that cannot be stored, purchased, or recovered. Money that is lost can sometimes be replaced, but lost time cannot be recovered.

Ask yourself: What am I doing with the time God has given me? Am I spending most of it on things that have no lasting value? Am I investing time in prayer, God's Word, family, work, service, and helping others?

DO NOT WASTE YOUR SEASON

Every stage of life has opportunities that may not return in exactly the same way. Young people have opportunities to learn and build a strong foundation. Parents have opportunities to raise and influence their children. Adults have opportunities to serve, mentor, lead, and contribute to society.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us that "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven."

Recognizing your season helps you focus on what God wants you to accomplish now rather than constantly wishing for another stage of life.

LIVE FOR GOD'S PURPOSE

Jesus demonstrated purposeful living. In John 9:4, He said, "I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day." Christ understood His assignment and did not waste His time.

As believers, we should also seek to discover and fulfil the purpose God has given us. Ephesians 2:10 teaches that we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared for us.

Your life may seem ordinary, but your daily actions can have eternal significance. A kind word, a prayer, an act of generosity, teaching a child, helping someone in need, or sharing the Gospel can make a lasting difference.

PREPARE FOR ETERNITY

Numbering our days should also remind us that earthly life is not the end. Hebrews 9:27 says that it is appointed for people to die once, after which comes judgment.

Therefore, the wisest thing we can do is make sure our lives are right with God. Jesus calls us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

Do not wait until tomorrow to begin walking closely with God. Do not wait until you become older before serving Him. Do not wait until everything is perfect before doing what is right.

Today is a gift. Use it wisely.

Let us ask God to teach us to number our days—not so that we will live in fear, but so that we will live with wisdom, purpose, gratitude, and eternal perspective.

May every day God gives us become an opportunity to love, serve, grow, and glorify Him.
