"Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly... But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season." - Psalm 1:1–3
The above bible verses presents a beautiful picture of what it means to live a blessed and fruitful life with God. The passage teaches us that true blessing is not simply about wealth, possessions, popularity, or success. A truly blessed person is someone whose life is rooted in God and His Word.
The Psalm begins by showing us what a blessed person does not do. He does not walk according to the advice of the ungodly, stand in the way of sinners, or sit among those who mock God. This describes a gradual process of becoming comfortable with influences that can pull us away from God's will.
Our associations matter. 1 Corinthians 15:33 warns that bad company can corrupt good character. We must therefore be careful about the people, conversations, entertainment, and ideas that continually influence our lives.
DELIGHTING IN GOD'S WORD
Psalm 1:2 gives us the positive side of the blessed life: "His delight is in the law of the LORD." The godly person does not see God's Word as a burden but as a source of guidance, wisdom, strength, and joy.
God's Word gives direction when we are confused and encouragement when we are discouraged. Psalm 119:105 says, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
When we delight in Scripture, we begin to think differently. God's Word shapes our decisions, attitudes, relationships, and priorities.
MEDITATING DAY AND NIGHT
The Psalm also says that the blessed person meditates on God's Word day and night. Meditation means deliberately thinking about God's Word, understanding it, applying it, and allowing it to influence our lives.
It is not enough to read the Bible occasionally. We need to carry God's Word with us throughout the day. Joshua 1:8 emphasizes the importance of meditating on God's Word and putting it into practice.
A person who continually feeds on God's Word develops spiritual strength.
LIKE A TREE BY RIVERS OF WATER
Psalm 1:3 gives us one of the most powerful images in Scripture: the godly person is "like a tree planted by the rivers of water."
A tree planted near a dependable water source has access to what it needs to remain alive and fruitful. In the same way, a believer who remains connected to God has a spiritual source that sustains him through difficult seasons.
Jesus said in John 15:5, "He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit." Our fruitfulness comes from remaining connected to Christ.
FRUIT IN THE RIGHT SEASON
Psalm 1:3 says the tree "bringeth forth his fruit in his season." This reminds us that growth takes time. Not every season produces the same results.
There may be seasons of preparation, waiting, testing, growth, and harvest. Do not become discouraged because you cannot yet see the fruit you are expecting. If your roots are firmly established in God, your appointed season of fruitfulness will come.
Galatians 6:9 encourages us not to become weary in doing good because we will reap in due season if we do not give up.
WHATEVER HE DOES SHALL PROSPER
The final part of Psalm 1:3 says, "Whatsoever he doeth shall prosper." This does not mean that a godly person will never experience hardship. Rather, it points to a life that is ultimately fruitful under God's direction.
When our plans align with God's will, He can establish the work of our hands. Proverbs 3:5–6 teaches us to trust the Lord and acknowledge Him in all our ways.
Therefore, choose your associations carefully. Delight in God's Word. Meditate on it continually. Stay connected to Christ.
When your roots are deep in God, you can remain standing even when the storms of life come.
Be planted in God's Word, remain connected to Christ, and your life will become fruitful in every season.
