The need for optimism and clarity in the face of uncertainty is evident in our constantly changing environment. Sacred promises found throughout the scriptures, which clearly describe the events leading up to Jesus Christ's Second Coming, provide Christians with comfort. Despite their frightening nature, these prophetic markers serve as a guide and a means of getting us ready for His glorious return. With the reverence and haste these deep truths need, let's dive in.

Wars and Rumors of Wars

During His teaching on the Mount of Olives, Jesus presented a series of indications that would precede His second coming. He issued a warning, saying, "You will hear of wars and rumors of wars" (Matthew 24:6, ESV). Global conflicts, societal upheaval, and the constant fear of nuclear catastrophe characterize our period of warfare. Though terrible, these turbulent occurrences should not lead to hopelessness but rather serve as a reminder of God's impending installation of his eternal rule and the transient nature of earthly governments.

Natural Disasters and Calamities

In Matthew 24, Jesus continues, referring to "famines and earthquakes in various places" (Matthew 24:7, ESV). Devastating earthquakes, wildfires, and catastrophic floods are on the rise, and this is a sign that the planet is calling out for help. These apparently never-ending tragedies are the "birth pangs" that herald the coming of a brand-new world in which "there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain" (Revelation 21:4, ESV).

False Prophets and Deception

False prophets becoming more prevalent is one of the most subtle indicators of the end times. As stated in Matthew 24:11 (ESV), Jesus forewarned that "many false prophets will arise and lead astray" This is also what the Apostle John says in 1 John 2:18–19: "As you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come." Deceptive ideas and false prophets abound in our day, twisting reality and drawing many people into spiritual danger. The widespread dissemination of false information emphasizes how important it is to exercise discernment and remain faithful to the Gospel's truth.

Persecution of Believers

Christians are facing unprecedented hostility worldwide. Matthew 24:9, which predicts a time when believers will face severe persecution, states, "Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake." Overt and covert forms of persecution are commonplace today, ranging from social exclusion to violent martyrdom. Despite the suffering, it unites us with Christ's own suffering and purifies our faith (like gold refined in the fire).
