With an understanding of the reasons many struggle with their tongues, we need to look into how we can manage our tongues. That is, what you can do to control your tongue as a child of God.
- As a child of God, you need to guard your heart diligently. If the heart is pure, the mouth will be controlled. Do not allow the devil and people (The world) around you to turn your heart to the dumpsite; guard your heart, do not give room for contaminators to contaminate your heart. Proverbs 4:23.
- Ecclesiastes 3:7 says “A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak”. You need to know that sometimes silence is spiritual maturity. Not every battle or matter needs your voice; sometimes, when you keep quiet, you put your enemies in a state of confusion because they will not have information about your next step, and they will not have information to use against you.
- Always speak with intention and not with emotion. Before you speak, always ask yourself whether what you want to say is true, necessary, and edifying. Etc. This is because Ephesians 4:29 says you should not allow any corrupt word to proceed out of your mouth. Be intentional with your words, not emotional.
- Another thing is that you must fill your mouth with the word of God. This is because you cannot consistently speak life if you are not filled with the true word of God. It is the amount of the word of God in you that you will dish out to your world. Colossians 3:16.
- Do you know you can be in the presence of God or in the company of the children of God without submitting your tongue to the Holy Spirit? To master how to control your tongue is to submit your tongue to the control of the Holy Spirit. Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. As a Christian youth, a child of God, your tongue must come under divine control if you are to have control over your tongue.
- Let it be a practice to speak life. Be conscious about it. Be intentional about always speaking life and positivity. Speak blessings over your life, speak peace in conflict, speak faith in adversity. Even when the situation looks negative, refuse to agree with destruction because the power to control the atmosphere around you is in your tongue.
A child of God who cannot control their tongue is living in danger; such a person will be living at the mercy of their enemies. An uncontrolled tongue will experience delays in purpose and destiny (You can read the book of Numbers, Chapters 13 and 14, for a better understanding). An uncontrolled tongue will destroy spiritual authority; it can disconnect you from God and from his divine purpose and plan for your life. When you do not have control over your tongue, you will be giving Satan the authority to close the door of access to God’s presence against you, when your tongue is controlled, your prayers become more effective, your relationship with God and with men become more stable, your faith in God and in his word become more productive, and your life will align with God’s promises and purpose for your life and destiny—proverbs 13:3.
CONCLUSION: You need to know and understand that your tongue is a spiritual steering wheel; it determines the direction of your life and destiny. James 3:4 compares the tongue to a rudder that controls a ship; that means, a small shift in your speech can change the entire course of your life.
You must ask God for purification of your heart so that your words can be pure. You must run away from every negative speaking pattern and let your mouth produce life. And if you are still struggling with an uncontrollable tongue, you need to run to the Savior for help; he is the only one who can help you through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Give your heart to the leading of the Holy Spirit, and you will see yourself speaking life and not death, you will see him helping you to build and not destroying. God bless you.
