Every idol worshipper has a sacred place or object to which they pay homage daily. For instance, those who anoint their idols with palm oil each day do so without fail because it has become a deeply ingrained part of their routine. Similarly, Christians should be intentional in their devotion to the one true God, who is all-powerful and sovereign. As stated in Colossians 1:16–17: “For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” In the Old Testament, God gave specific instructions to the Israelites about maintaining a perpetual fire on the altar. Leviticus 6:12-13 (NIV) says, “The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. Every morning the priest is to add firewood and arrange the burnt offering on the fire and burn the fat of the fellowship offerings on it. The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out.” This fire symbolized God's presence and His covenant with His people. It was a constant reminder that God was always with them, guiding and protecting them. In the same way, as modern believers, we are called to keep our spiritual fire burning. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO KEEP THE FIRE BURNING? Keeping the fire burning on your altar means maintaining a passionate, ongoing relationship with God. It involves consistent spiritual practices that keep you connected to Him. It has to do with intentionality through: WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT WE KEEP THE FIRE ON OUR ALTAR BURNING? Conclusively, keeping the fire burning on your altar as a child of God is about maintaining an active, vibrant relationship with Him. Through prayer, studying God’s word, worship, and fellowship, we can ensure our spiritual fire never goes out. This not only benefits our own spiritual growth and resilience but also serves as a beacon to those around us, drawing them closer to God. As we commit to these practices, we keep the divine fire alive in our hearts, guiding us through life’s challenges and blessings.
