The words “Behold, I come quickly” are among the most powerful promises recorded in the Bible. They remind believers that Jesus Christ will one day return as He promised. Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus spoke about His second coming and encouraged His followers to remain faithful, watchful, and prepared. The promise of His return is not meant to create fear in the hearts of God's children but to inspire holy living, faithful service, and joyful expectation.
In Revelation 22:12, Jesus declares, “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.” This verse teaches us that the return of Christ will bring both reward and accountability. Every believer has been given opportunities, gifts, and responsibilities by God. One day, we will give an account of how we used them. Therefore, we must not live carelessly but faithfully serve the Lord while we wait for His return.
The Bible makes it clear that no one knows the exact day or hour when Jesus will come. Matthew 24:36 says that the day and hour are known only to the Father. Because His coming will be unexpected, believers are encouraged to remain spiritually alert. Jesus said in Matthew 24:42, “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.” Watching means living with spiritual awareness and refusing to allow sin, worldly distractions, or spiritual laziness to weaken our relationship with God.
One important way to prepare for Christ's return is by living a holy life. 1 Peter 1:15–16 tells us to be holy in all our conduct because God Himself is holy. Holiness is not simply about outward appearance; it begins in the heart and is reflected in our thoughts, words, decisions, and relationships. As we await Christ's coming, we must continually seek God's forgiveness, obey His Word, and allow the Holy Spirit to transform us.
Jesus also illustrated the importance of readiness through the Parable of the Ten Virgins in Matthew 25:1–13. Five virgins were wise and prepared with enough oil for their lamps, while five were foolish and unprepared. When the bridegroom arrived, only those who were ready entered with him. This parable teaches us that spiritual preparation cannot be borrowed from others. Every person must personally know Christ and maintain a genuine relationship with Him.
The expectation of Christ's return should also motivate us to share the Gospel. Jesus commanded His followers to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19–20). Many people still need to hear about God's love and the salvation found in Jesus Christ. As believers, we should use every opportunity to speak about Christ, demonstrate His love, and encourage others to prepare for eternity.
However, waiting for Jesus does not mean sitting idle. In Luke 19:13, Jesus said, “Occupy till I come.” We are called to remain active in the work of God's Kingdom. We should serve faithfully, help those in need, use our talents wisely, support the work of the Gospel, and remain committed to doing good. 1 Corinthians 15:58 encourages us to be steadfast and always active in the work of the Lord, knowing that our labor is not in vain.
The promise “Behold, I come quickly” also gives believers hope. The world may be filled with trouble, injustice, pain, and uncertainty, but Jesus has promised to return and establish His perfect rule. John 14:3 gives us this assurance: “I will come again and receive you to Myself.” This promise reminds us that our present struggles are temporary, and a glorious future awaits those who remain faithful to Christ.
Therefore, let us live each day with eternity in mind. Let us forgive quickly, love sincerely, pray faithfully, serve diligently, and walk in obedience to God. We must not postpone repentance or delay our commitment to Christ, because His coming will be sudden.
May our hearts continually echo the prayer of the Apostle John: “Even so, come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:20). Until that glorious day, let us remain watchful, faithful, and ready, confidently holding on to the promise of our Savior: “Surely I am coming quickly.”
