Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.” –John 4:31

Food is an important part of culture, and often a symbol of pride. People from different parts of the world eat different types of food. Food is also used to mark special occasions. It increases the feeling of satiety and also provides some level of comfort and relief from stress.

However these days, there’s so much pressure to look our best, with a lot of emphasis on losing weight. It’s so easy to get carried away by the latest fad diet and be overwhelmed with the amount of information that is out there. Nonetheless, eating regularly is just as important as losing weight. As a matter of fact, eating healthy and nutritious foods at regular times during the day helps burn calories at a faster rate, and reduces the temptation to snack on foods that are high in fat and sugar.[1]

Food is essential for survival as it provides nutrients which are used to provide energy needed sustain functions, growth and repair of the body. Jesus knew the importance of food. In Matthew 14, after preaching to the crowd, it was already late in the evening and his disciples urged him to send them away. But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!” –Matthew 14:16 (NASB). Again, in Luke 8, after He had raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead, the first and only request that Jesus made besides telling her parents not to speak of the miracle that had just taken place, was that that she be given food to eat. And at that moment her life returned, and she immediately stood up! Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. –Luke 8:55 (NLT).

Eating regularly is also crucial for the elderly as it allows them to get the right amount of nutrients on a daily basis to keep healthy, fight off sickness, keep energy levels up and keep their minds working.[2] The elderly are advised to get most of their calories from nutrient rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, nuts and grains. Fiber is also essential for a healthy digestive system; soluble fiber is especially important for maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and some sources include: fruits and vegetables, nuts, whole grains and oats.[3] These should be complemented with drinking plenty of water.

Eating is an integral part of our lives, and like any other activity, it should be done to glorify God. So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God –I Corinthians 10:31 (NIV). As Christians we can glorify God while eating through a simple prayer of thanks, inviting others to join us and by not overindulging in food. Even the choice of what to eat presents an opportunity to glorify God with our bodies. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own –I Corinthians 6:19 (NIV).  Eating should not be approached with the feeling of guilt or fear of gaining weight, but rather with a thankful heart. As we eat, let’s make a conscious effort to glorify God by our actions and the decisions we make.
