Text: Joshua 24:15 – "...But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

A family altar is a dedicated time and place where family members gather to worship God through prayer, Bible study, praise, and thanksgiving. It is the spiritual foundation upon which godly homes are built. In today's busy world, many families have neglected the family altar, leading to weakened spiritual lives and increased moral challenges. God desires every Christian home to become a place where His presence is honored daily.

The Bible gives us several examples of men who built altars unto God. Abraham built altars wherever he encountered God (Genesis 12:7-8; Genesis 13:18). These altars represented fellowship, worship, and complete dependence on God. Likewise, every Christian family should establish a spiritual altar where God is consistently sought.

A strong family altar produces spiritually healthy families. It teaches children the fear of God and builds lasting faith in their hearts. In Deuteronomy 6:6-7, God instructed parents to diligently teach His commandments to their children at home, throughout the day. Children who grow up hearing God's Word and participating in family prayers are more likely to remain steadfast in their faith even when they become adults.

The family altar is also a place of unity. When parents and children pray together, they learn to trust God together. Family members become more forgiving, loving, and supportive of one another. Psalm 133:1 declares, "Behold, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" Prayer strengthens relationships because it invites God's presence into the home.

Another benefit of the family altar is divine protection. In Job 1:5, Job regularly offered sacrifices and prayed on behalf of his children. He understood the importance of interceding for his family. As parents pray consistently, they commit their children, marriages, careers, and future into God's hands. Many unseen dangers are prevented through faithful family prayers.

However, raising a family altar requires commitment and discipline. Parents, especially fathers, should take spiritual leadership in the home. Mothers should provide support, while children should be encouraged to participate actively. The family altar does not need to be lengthy; even fifteen to thirty minutes of sincere worship, Bible reading, and prayer each day can transform a home.

To maintain a successful family altar:

  1. Choose a regular time that is convenient for everyone.
  2. Read and discuss a portion of Scripture together.
  3. Sing worship songs and give thanks to God.
  4. Pray for one another and present family needs before God.
  5. Encourage every family member, including children, to participate.

There will be distractions, busy schedules, and sometimes discouragement, but consistency is more important than perfection. As the family remains faithful, spiritual growth becomes evident, peace fills the home, and God's blessings become more visible.

Our world desperately needs godly families that shine as lights in the midst of darkness. Strong churches are built from strong families, and strong families are built on strong spiritual foundations. A home without prayer easily becomes vulnerable to fear, conflict, temptation, and spiritual weakness. But a home that continually seeks God becomes a place of peace, wisdom, favor, and victory. In conclusion, every Christian family should intentionally raise and maintain a family altar. Let your home become a sanctuary where God is worshipped daily, His Word is honored, and His presence is welcomed. Like Joshua boldly declared, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 24:15). May every family renew its commitment to God, establish a vibrant family altar, and experience His abundant grace, protection, unity, and blessings.
