Plans fails for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they success”. Proverbs 15:22

Sooner than later, you realize it is time to plan for your own home. Questions like are we going to buy a land and build or are we going to buy a ready built home, pay instantly or make a monthly installment comes up.  These are questions couples often deliberate on. After deliberation comes a plan, an agreement on how you are going to acquire that new home of your dreams. There are several estates springing up in various parts of town and real estate buyers looking for interested buyers.

Despite a depressive economy and souring rents on newly built standard homes, couples are still faced with the reality and need to acquire their own homes. Couples with children are jumping into the housing market and nearly four out of five of such buyers are first timers.  Making the switch from renter to owner can be quite a daunting process for newbie’s. It is important to be careful so as not to fall into the numerous potential pitfalls that a lot of couples make, such as committing to a house you can’t really afford, giving your money to fraudsters. Before you commit, follow these steps;

Budget: Check your budget and make long term plans If you plan to buy a home or a land. Are you going to be paying a monthly installment or can you afford an outright buy? Is this plan going to keep you on a tight rope? Will you be able to meet up with the monthly installment payment? These are things to take a critical look at and plan before taking that step, plan! Plan! Plan and plan over a long time. Proverbs 16:9, 24:17.

Be Practical- At first sight, the house or land. According to Joseph when he was shown a land, he bought it. It was after building on it that he realized he’d made a mistake in buying the land.  The area was underdeveloped; the road was so bad that he had to pay a routine visit to the mechanic every week to fix his cars.  There was also a canal and the road became flooded whenever it rained. To compound the problem, it was a distance from his home to the office. After a few years he was forced to move out of the house and go rent accommodation somewhere else. Be practical when buying a house, look at the inside of the house, It is not just the beauty, is it serviceable? Is the environment accessible? Is everything working as it should? Is the location okay? Half of all home owners have one regret about their current home. Never make a purchase without considering all these angles. You may adore that beautiful house or land near the swamp or outskirt of town but you should also be thinking long term. Will the perfect for now still work when the children are in their teens? Don’t buy something you might regret; it is better to make long term plans so you don’t settle for less. Sometimes the perfect land may not be the perfect place. Take a pick from Lawrence who bought a land and built a mansion in an area that is susceptible to flooding. He spent so much trying to elevate the place but had to sell it in the end. Finally, practicality is the key when buying a home or a land. Genesis 41:34-36
